Let’s go invent tomorrow instead of worrying about what happened yesterday – Steve Jobs
Technology is changing very quickly. Just last year alone, we saw some major developments in the fields of robotics, artificial intelligence, and virtual reality. Technology is improving at a rapid rate and it’s hard to predict what will happen next. However, technology analysts are predicting the future of technologies. We combed through loads of predictions to give you the top 10 predictions for 2020-2021.
Brain-Machine Interface, Intelligent Robots, and DNA Computing may sound like a plotline from the latest Hollywood blockbuster, but we expect these emerging technologies to potentially have a transformational impact on our everyday lives. Thus, we have compiled a list of the Top 10 Trending Technologies in 2021.
1. Brain-Machine Interface
To better understand why our brain, a biological organ, can be connected to a machine, let us first look at its major functions. It is believed that the brain's operations generate electrical signals that produce sensations in the body. The brain's communication with the body is facilitated by nerves. In general, we have about 100 trillion nerve cells, each of them represented by a particular neuron, with a myelin sheath, around which the electrochemical signals are compressed. This sheath is called "myelin" because it covers neurons, transferring the signal they send from one neuron to another with very high efficiency.
2. Intelligent Robots
The advent of human-machine interfaces that let robots perform tasks normally reserved for humans will change the face of our workplaces. Intelligent robots will be able to do this by replacing human workers on factory floors, as well as out in the field doing things that require dexterity and agility.
In Japan, for example, Ironic Robotics is developing a robot able to vacuum a home while you are away or make sandwiches for you while you are at the supermarket. And while IBM researchers are working on an Intelligent Electronic Hand for IHV, a little bird told us that they’re also working on a robot that can solve Rubik’s cubes, so that’s a start.
It’s important to keep in mind that this list isn’t focused on AI.
3. DNA Computing
The very first thing that is going to happen, when DNA computing comes up in 2021, will be that DNA databases will be breached. Being "as safe as a recipe for scotch" is going to make obsolete the current process of naming a corporation. This is going to cause a storm in the markets, and also allow for some interesting investment opportunities. In fact, if someone is financially savvy, he will be able to play with this by re-orienting his investment portfolio to take advantage of this future risk.
Easily controllable 3D printers
One thing is for sure. Once DNA computing will be a real thing, and Epson is already working on it, it is going to be an easy task for an enterprising person to set up a 3D printer from scratch.
4. Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality
With technology taking on a more integral role in our everyday lives, emerging technologies such as virtual reality and augmented reality are being researched by tech companies at a breakneck pace. Both technologies rely on a combination of sensors, computing power, and interactivity.
Commercially, augmented reality can be seen in VR headsets like Samsung Gear VR which puts a digital overlay onto the physical world. However, virtual reality will soon become a commercial reality that will benefit the likes of YouTube, Netflix, and gaming companies, at least, in the coming decade.
We can also expect augmented reality to start invading our lives in a much more meaningful way, as it has the potential to influence brain function.
5. Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning
Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning are already used in large industries, and with an increase in use cases and machine interfaces, we are likely to see increased adoption of AI in transportation, finance, healthcare, manufacturing, and many other sectors. Meanwhile, with an improved understanding of the link between machine learning and networked devices, we expect the merging of information into the physical world with Artificial Intelligence to become a reality. This will create a major wave of growth for AI companies as adoption will gain momentum.
Speech Recognition
An event-driven digital assistant is an essential element in any office, and this requirement is not going to change anytime soon.
6. Deep Learning and Cognitive Computing
The most impressive trend in 2016 was that computers – yes, computers – outperformed human beings on all traditional cognitive tasks such as image, speech, and language processing. The next big thing is to combine computers with the human brain, perhaps to enable machines to think, reason, learn and adapt in ways that humans can only dream of. However, one thing is certain: in the not-too-distant future, we can expect the systems to interact directly with the nervous system to recognize and react to surroundings – i.e., to understand what is being said, what it means, who said it, and what it means. Essentially, computers will become smart enough to understand the world around them and relate it to the users.
7. Quantum Computing and Cryptography
Quantum computing is an emerging technology that has the potential to fundamentally change the way we think about computing. It is an exciting field that is working to put quantum computers and cryptography at the heart of online security and privacy for generations to come. Quantum computing will be used to create better encryption systems, reduce the risk of intrusion, and implement powerful cryptography in new fields such as financial services.
Memory Engineering
The memory architecture industry is undergoing a transition with the dawn of new memory technology. Incorporating new memory types such as Optane DRAM, and the elimination of ASICs in general, memory technology will shift towards high density and low latency configurations.
8. Blockchain and AI in Security
The biggest threat that this year saw was the WannaCry ransomware attack. If you are a regular to the internet, you must be familiar with what ransomware is, but the key here is that with it comes to the risk of costly data loss. Blockchain is the answer, the distributed ledger is touted to provide a secure and reliable solution to cyber threats.
You can say that blockchain will be a disruptive technology for the future. However, it is not the only alternative solution, AI is also being talked about to manage these cyber threats. With plenty of research and development happening around the globe, it won’t be long before these cutting-edge technologies become a reality.
9. Autonomous Vehicles
We live in an era where car manufacturers are compelled to develop and produce highly efficient autonomous vehicles. Autonomous vehicles would need to save money and time as well as reduce traffic accidents. The cars would need to be able to prevent collisions between them and potentially save thousands of lives.
Nevertheless, these cars may likely come with significant safety issues. We don’t know how many of these cars would need to be produced to replace the millions of cars currently in use.
Despite this, the race is on to develop the best vehicles. Google is likely to introduce the first fully autonomous car with completely different safety features than conventional vehicles.
10. The Next Generation of the Internet of Things
The next generation of the Internet of Things is emerging at an accelerated pace. The present generation of the Internet of Things consists of people, products, services, objects, and machines.
Smart infrastructure, intelligent transportation, smart factories, and connected cities will pave the way for the next generation of the Internet of Things.
In the coming years, the Internet of Things will become more intelligent and capable, eliminating the need for humans to make physical interventions. These sensors and machines will work seamlessly together to improve efficiency, security, efficiency, and user experience.
It is not uncommon to see home automation systems currently being adopted in developed countries like USA and Canada.
